Street Lighting

Installation charges are based on the estimated costs of SMECO facilities required to serve the light, such as cable and conduit (transformer costs are not charged).

To request street lighting, please complete and submit the street Lighting Service Request.

The applicant is responsible for determining where to install the light, and the location must comply with all state, county, and local ordinances. (SMECO will not be held responsible for light placement.) See the SMECO Lighting Engineering Guide for design assistance.

The lead time for most of the street lights below is approximately 90 days. The lead time for multi-purpose roadway lights is approximately 120 days. If payment is required, SMECO will bill the customer, and the lead time will begin after SMECO receives payment.

7 types of lights are available.

  • All new installations are LED energy-efficient lights, 3,000 Kelvin (K), unless noted
  • For 16-foot fiberglass poles, a portion of the pole will be buried, so the light will be about 12 feet from the ground
  • All lights and rates are subject to change

If you would like these lights in your community, or if you have any questions, please contact SMECO. We also offer Residential Area Lights for customers who would like outdoor lights at their homes.

Conversion to LED lights

SMECO will convert all existing street lighting to LED lighting based on a planned rollout. If your community currently has metal halide or high pressure sodium lighting, your neighborhood association may request conversion to LED lighting; however, you will need to follow the schedule described in SMECO’s SL Tariff (PDF). Conversions may take from 90 to 180 days to complete based on how many applicants are in queue.

Glossary

  • Light Distribution Types (see SMECO Lighting Engineering Guide (PDF) for diagrams)
    • II – Narrow light distribution; typically a lateral width of 25 degrees; ideal for sidewalks
    • III – Asymmetrical light distribution; typically a lateral width of 40 degrees; ideal for roadway and sidewalks
    • V – Symmetrical light distribution, where the intensity is the same in all 360 degrees of the light
  • Lumens – Measurement of light, one foot-candle is one lumen per square foot.
  • Kelvin – a measurement of color temperature, a way to describe the light appearance provided by a light bulb; 3000 K provides a warm white or pale yellow hue; 7000 K provides a cool white or pale blue hue.
