Cooperative Review - September 2018

Committed to sustainability

SMECO is committed to the protection and preservation of natural resources. The cooperative strives to balance the needs of its members with its goal to protect the environment, all while providing reliable, competitively-priced electricity and related services. This commitment to enhance the quality of life in Southern Maryland is aligned with the cooperative’s commitment to environmental stewardship, and it would not be possible without the participation of the cooperative’s members.

EmPOWER Maryland energy savings

As part of the EmPOWER Maryland program, SMECO has paid more than $50 million in energy efficiency incentives to members, resulting in more than 321,364 megawatt-hours (MWh) saved since 2009.

Do you want to help those numbers grow while also saving energy and saving money at home? Visit smeco.coop/save.

CoolSentry

SMECO members also help reduce the cooperative’s energy footprint by participating in SMECO’s CoolSentry program to curtail peak demand. As of December 2017, there were more than 46,000 homes with CoolSentry.

Participants in CoolSentry receive either a programmable thermostat or a digital cycling unit (DCU) on the outdoor central A/C unit. During times of peak demand between June 1 and September 30, SMECO holds a conservation event.

Each conservation event offsets almost 40 MW of capacity during peak days—that’s a lot of energy. In the past 10 years, SMECO has reduced capacity costs by more than $39 million and those savings are shared with all SMECO members.
