SMECO joined other cooperatives from around the nation at the 2015 Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. with four local high school students from our service territory. SMECO chaperones Natalie Cotton and Charlie Herbert took Matthew Bennett from Northern High School, Sadé Herbert from Chopticon High School, Laura Phillips from Westlake High School, and Rica Taliman from Gwynn Park High School to the Youth Tour.

The goal of the Youth Tour is to help students learn more about our government in action during their week-long study tour of the nation's capital, where they meet members of congress. This year, students were also able to attend workshops on the roles that cooperatives play in communities and an electric co-op opportunity fair, both new additions to the week's line-up of events.

Approximately 1,700 students and chaperones representing 43 states attended the Youth Tour for its 51st year.
