As part of SMECO’s commitment to the community it serves, each year the Cooperative raises money for a different local charity. The two main fund-raisers are the SMECO 75 Bike Ride in June and the Charity Golf Tournament in October. Both events are supported by a group of volunteers, the SMECO executive team, and vendors.
After the 2016 fund-raisers, SMECO employees donated $53,476 to Melwood’s Operation: Tohidu, which assists wounded veterans and active duty military in overcoming obstacles to their recovery. Operation: Tohidu’s experiential rehabilitation program focuses on confidence-building, outdoor activities, and group discussion in a relaxed, positive environment using proven techniques for the self-management of symptoms, stressors, and responses.
