Application for SMECO Corporate Charity

As part of our commitment to the community, each year SMECO raises money for a different local charity. 

For 2020 we’re focusing on organizations working to end the opioid epidemic in Southern Maryland. Small town life has been turned upside down by opioid use and we understand that successful programs will require numerous organizations and engaged citizens to help save lives.

This year, we are inviting local non-profit organizations to apply for consideration to be selected as SMECO’s 2020 Corporate Charity. SMECO’s main fund-raisers are the SMECO 75 Bike Ride in June and the Annual Charity Golf Outing in October. Both events are supported by a group of volunteer employees, the SMECO executive team, and vendors.

To be considered, organizations must be located in SMECO’s service area and working to address the opioid epidemic through education, prevention, or treatment. Organizations that have received contributions from SMECO’s charity events between 2015 and 2019 are not eligible. To be eligible for consideration organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
  • Be served by SMECO
  • Application must include the following:
    • Contact information
    • Website for organization
    • IRS Tax exemption notification
    • Most recent annual report
    • Total revenue and expense budget
    • List of organization’s governing board and staff
    • Description of how the funds will be used

SMECO may select a single organization that provides services throughout Southern Maryland or disburse the funds among multiple organizations, located in each county served by the Co-op.

The application deadline is October 1, 2019. We will announce the 2020 recipients on December 15, 2019.
