Distribution Protection & Reliability Engineer

Job Description:

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Distribution Protection & Reliability Engineer.  The primary position functions include: 1) Establishing protective device settings and verifying device coordination for SMECO’s 15kV electric distribution system,  2) Developing and implementing 15kV protective device specifications, applications, installations, troubleshooting, and training to ensure 15kV distribution system reliability, and 3) Back-up and support system planning related functions relating to engineering studies, system interconnections, operational procedures, and physical construction activities necessary to maintain the safe efficient reliable operation of SMECO’s electric system.

This position requires an individual who is a self-starter capable of readily learning new concepts, motivated with initiative to excel and expand with limited supervision, confident and resolved when working with and dealing with other individuals in a respectful manner, has a firm grasp of electrical engineering theory, building blocks, and concepts, has good organizational and time management skills, is capable of working through and solving problems with limited supervision, and is in touch with modern industry technology and trends.   

We are seeking candidates who could possibly be slotted into one of three potential job classifications based on proven verifiable experience (Associate Engineer, Sr. Associate Engineer, or Engineer).  All position levels require a BS in Electrical Engineering.  Although not inclusively required, all position levels do desire a potential candidate with a practical working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), electric utility system protection, planning, engineering, construction, and operation practices, along with a demonstrated working knowledge of electric utility related and MS Office software applications.   The Associate level position does not require direct experience but does desire an individual with a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training certification.  The Sr. Associate level position requires a minimum of two years progressive work experience in the engineering, construction, or operations department of an electric utility or equivalent engineering consulting firm along with a desired Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training certification.  The Engineer level requires a minimum of four years progressive work experience in the engineering, construction, or operations department of an electric utility or equivalent engineering consulting firm along with a desirable MD Professional Engineering license.  

SMECO offers and excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.  Starting salary range is dependent on assigned position level / step and ranges from $63,800 to $109,400.

Senior Operations Supervisor

Job Description:

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has two openings for a Senior Operations Supervisor.  One in our Hughesville location and one in our Leonardtown location.  The primary function of the Sr. Operations Supervisor is to ensure the safety of employees, customers, and contractors during all work applications.  The Sr. Operations Supervisor will manage internal resources, external contracted resources and business applications/processes based on the need of the business unit. This includes supervisory duties in Electric Operations related to planning, scheduling, operations and construction of the SMECO transmission and distribution systems.  The Sr. Operations Supervisor is also responsible for overseeing the construction or maintenance activities related to the company's transmission and distribution infrastructure.  The Sr. Operations Supervisors will also ensure that customers' needs are met in an efficient and timely manner through the effective management/utilization of system applications, personnel, equipment, and materials.

The successful Sr. Supervisor candidates, along with a commitment to safety, will have the ability to lead the Regional Operations Team, be innovative, have high integrity, demonstrate personal responsibility for results and be able to foster a strong sense of urgency in others to meet or exceed established goals.

A Two-year college degree or equivalent with formal course work in electrical engineering, electrical distribution or other related technical subjects is preferable.  Minimum of five years of progressive experience in a distribution/construction operations trade and/or five years of experience in supervision of direct reports.  Five years of experience as a General Foreman/Operations Supervisor preferred.

Starting salary ranges is $93,400 to $125,800.  SMECO offers an excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.

Relay Technician

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has an immediate opening for a RELAY TECHNICIAN in Hughesville, Maryland.  SMECO is a rapidly growing electric utility that serves 160,000 consumers just south of Washington, D.C.  SMECO is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace.  This position pays $43.88/hr.  In addition, a 3% non-elective 401k contribution is provided to the employee and they are eligible to receive a matching contribution of $.50 on the dollar not to exceed 1%.

The job function includes:

  • Installation, troubleshooting, and testing of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system;
  • Installation, troubleshooting, and testing of microprocessor-based protective relaying systems on the 230kV, 69kV and 12.47kV electrical systems.
  • Supports the commissioning and repair of various substation equipment.

 Two years formal training in electronics, or the equivalent, is required.  An ideal candidate would have two years experience working with electrical systems.
